Chapel Hill, North Carolina CON/SPAN® Project News
Due to a large rain recently in North Carolina the Piney Mountain Road was washed out on the night of July 23-24. The road remains closed today awaiting replacement. The emergency nature of the wash out allows the city of Chapel Hill to let the contract without formal bidding as would otherwise be required.
They evaluated precast pipe, box, and elliptical pipe and finally chose the pre-cast concrete arch because it met the height restrictions with the flow capacity needed and was deliverable in four weeks.
The project was estimated at $160,000 but the city is setting aside $200,000 for contingencies.
